From my seventh-grade diary, recently rediscovered behind a ceiling tile in my parents’ basement:
1. One who gives you presents on Xmas and your birthday
2. One who always wants to dance with you at every dance
3. One who puts his arm protectively but not too possessively around your shoulders. [Note in the margins: “Whoa, this one seems a little far off. We’ll see.”]
4. One who takes you to a PG-13 movie every Friday night.
5. One who calls you at untimely hours of the day just to talk.
6. One who holds your hand. [”This, too, is in the future. Not now!”]
7. One who compliments you on your hair and outfit every day.
8. One who kissed you once. [”Gimme a break! I don’t think so!”]
9. One who brags about you to his friends.
10. One who looks at you during class.
11. One who waits for you at your locker.
12. One who offers to carry your books for you. [”Call me old-fashioned, but I’d love this. Unfortunately, he has his own books to carry.”]
13. One who signs his notes ‘Love.’
14. One who walks you to class.
15. One who gives you his jacket. [”I think I’ll go jacketless to the dance.”]
16. One who sticks up for you. [”In what?”]
17. One who admits to anyone that he likes you.
18. One who doesn’t ridicule you.
19. One who respects you.
20. One who will always love you and never go away. [”Yes, it’s true. I’m bonkers.”]
